I view design as the synergy between art and construction. Until a design can be built, occupied and used as intended, it’s just art. Successful design provides a comfortable, aesthetically pleasing space that inspires people and helps them to be more efficient.
Building design is a serious responsibility. It directly impacts the attitude and emotions of people who use the building, drivers passing by, neighbors and others. Perhaps 50 people occupy the building, but thousands are touched by it daily, many who will never set foot inside.
My work in Contract Documents and Contract Administration is about creating win, win, win from three perspectives. Owners need effective, functional buildings; we want solid design quality; the contractor wants design that can be built efficiently.
I began my career as a tradesman. This gives me an advantage in developing documents and fieldwork—I’m hard to bluff.
