My role in finance and HR isn’t about quantities and numbers. I’m focused on people, because people make the numbers work and people create designs.
I help to shape the culture of the firm, which directly impacts design. We’re very open here. If people are comfortable with their jobs—their positions, benefits, roles—they’re more willing to share ideas and collaborate. The more sharing, the better the design, the better the project.
Design is only as good as the people sitting around the table. To be sure we’re getting the best ideas, we’ve created a transparent organization with people who are approachable. I influence design by forging communications.
We promote leadership and listening and work very hard at it. Principals meet monthly to talk about how to be effective leaders, foster creativity, set guidelines, not boundaries. Together we continuously create a culture that supports design.
