What makes for good design is similar to what makes a good person.
How does the individual or building relate to the community? Does the person or the place have a sense of self? What work do they perform? Are they helpful? Friendly? Welcoming?
Empathy is a necessity when solving a clients’ design problems. I learn about their needs and desires by listening more than telling. I enjoy helping clients realize their vision with design that enhances their mission in ways they might not expect.
A successful building is intuitive and transparent, the design literally or figuratively expressing its function. On a subliminal level it is enjoyed without thought, like a sunset. I want to create spaces, elements and details to provide present-moment experiences.
Aesthetics and other design influences should balance. Over time, those experiencing a building can't tell if it was on time or budget, but they'll know if it’s good design.
