Penn State Erie

Bostwick Design Partnership was contracted to design a new Industrial Engineering Classroom/Lab building for Penn State Erie – The Behrend College on a lot owned by The Economic Development Corporation of Erie County located in Knowledge Park. The building is designed to house the Industrial Engineering program at PSU Behrend, as well as private industry tenants working with the students in a collaborative environment. Bostwick Design has developed an approach to the design of this project that encompasses all aspects of the EDC/PSB strategic plan and mission statement for Knowledge Park. Bostwick Design worked with the EDC and PSU Behrend representatives to determine an appropriate architectural design that provides a unique appearance for this building, while being sensitive to the overall campus building design, or “campus branding”.

Location: Erie, PA  |  Map

Size: 60,000 SF

Construction Type: New Construction

Impact

Following the contours of the site, the building bends at its center. The fulcrum marks the main entry with a glass volume that pushes apart the brick and lifts up the roof.

Shear

As the program blocks deflect and slide in relation to each other, a void opens up at the fulcrum creating the lobby atrium. The shearing of the volumes articulate the central spine and announce entry at the far ends.

Wrap

Proud of the brick facade, a thin plane of metal wraps the north face of the building, bends, and becomes roof. On the south face, the metal cuts into the heavy mass of brick.

Texture

While referencing the vernacular of factory buildings, the simple palette of materials re-invent themselves in a series of linear patterns that intersect each other in dramatic ways.
