Central Chiller Plant

Bowling Green State University

Following the realization that the CCP could not be an addition, Bostwick Design Partnership, with guidance from the University, undertook a site location study and evaluation with regard to proximity to areas the plant will serve; possible routing of services; building access; pedestrian flow; future master-plan developments; creation of outdoor spaces; and physical site restrictions such as existing parking, roads, and utilities. The base building, approximately 4,800 SF, one story, 20’ tall, is a solid brick mass, grounded to the earth. This enclosure houses the centrifugal chillers and the bulk of the mechanical and electrical equipment to serve them. On the roof of the building are the cooling towers, air vents, and some additional miscellaneous equipment. In direct contrast with the base, the light, ephemeral, and semitransparent stainless steel screen surrounds the roof-top equipment. The form of the building responds to the regulating geometry of the FAC and of Conklin Hall to the South.
